Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a disorder related to severe emotion dysregulation where a person feels overwhelmed by their emotional experiences and can struggle to cope. The causes of BPD are generally thought to be linked to a genetic vulnerability to emotional sensitivity coupled with trauma and difficult interpersonal functioning. Symptoms of BPD are complex and distressing and people suffering with this disorder can be more emotionally reactive to perceived stress in their lives and can experience problems with depression and anxiety, persistent suicidal thinking and self-harm, addictive behaviours, phobias, and difficulty in relationships and social functioning.
